By Caroline Malott of Red Roof KuneKunes

WHY IS QUARANTINE IMPORTANT?

  • Disease Evaluation
    • Look the pig over
      • skin
      • eyes
      • weight
      • activity level
  • Performing Vaccination Protocols Used on Your Farm
  • De Worming
  • Getting to Know Your New Pig

Travel is stressful on pigs and thier immune system can be lowered due to stress making them more susceptible to picking up disease.

Transport often is NOT private transport and they will be exposed to other animals that could have some type of transmitable illenss.

HOW LONG SHOULD THE  QUARANTINE PERIOD LAST?

We suggest 6 weeks.  This gives enough time to evaluate for any disease as well as de worm twice and re vaccinate.  In addition, it gives the new owner time to get to know their new pig.

WHAT SHOULD A QUARANTINED ARE LOOK LIKE?

Quarantine areas should be far away enough from your other pigs and farm animals that they can NOT not touch noses.  They should NOT share fence line.  The further away you can get your new pig from your other farm animals the better.

HOW TO KEEP YOURSELF CLEAN AFTER LEAVING THE QUARANTINE AREA?

Remember each time you go into the quarantine are you must disinfect your boots and hands.

Do not use any of the same farm items in the quarantine area.

Once quarantine is over, remember to clean out all bedding and disinfect the sleeping quarters as well as water and food dishes.
