KUNEKUNE VET CARE
OBTAINING A VET
- DO NOT WAIT FOR AN EMERGENCY TO FIND A VET!
- Having a veterinarian that will see pigs is an absolute must for all KuneKune owners.
- Please do not assume that your farm vet will work on pigs.
- Find a back up vet to your primary vet in case of emergencies.
- Have your vet come to your farm to develop and establish a relationship with them. This is critical for obtaining medications that require a vet prescription as most all antibiotics are now script only via your vet.
- Find a vet that will make a farm call. Loading a 300 pound sick pick (if you have a trailer) can be extremely difficult.
- Ask your vet about after hours and weekend hours in the event of an animal emergency.
- Many vets that do see pigs do not know much about KuneKunes. If this is the case with your vet remind them the KuneKunes:
- the body condition should be fat and round (not obese) not lean like traditional swine.
- are a lard breed
- are slower growing and not full size until they are 3 to 4 years of age
